One of the most honorable ways to contribute to one’s country is to serve in the military. This is particularly true in times of war, but it is also true during peacetime. However, serving in the military, even in peacetime, can extract a terrible toll upon service men and women. The Veterans Administration has a system set up for veterans to make claims for compensation based upon disabilities which are service-connected. These disabilities can range from physical injuries, to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to diseases which first manifested during the time of service (or in some cases, thereafter).

Unfortunately, the VA does not make it easy for veterans to receive compensation, except in the most obvious cases. For example, a veteran will likely receive compensation without much difficulty if he or she has lost a limb in combat. However, in cases where the veteran has incurred PTSD in combat, many times the VA will deny the veteran’s claim because PTSD may not be not apparent from a physical examination. The veteran may look completely healthy, but may be in need of psychological or psychiatric treatment for extreme stress he or she experienced. This is only one example of many hundreds of situations where the VA wrongfully denies claims that the vet is entitled to have approved.

Additionally, the VA has a very complex administrative system which often takes years to resolve a claim. In fact, the system is so complex that many attorneys do not attempt to practice veterans benefits law. The administrative system set up by the VA is a far cry from the ordinary court system which most attorneys regularly encounter.
